I’m often asked where I get my ideas from. The truth is I get them from all over the place. I look at the world around me where tower blocks become monsters or castles.
I grew up in a tower block and in the mornings I’d notice how the sunlight looked bouncing off the concrete. I’d see faces in the trees from our third floor flat and imagine that those trees were talking.
Wherever I go, I carry a notebook to note down ideas and phrases as soon as they hit. Not everything I write down will become a poem, but some things will.

I’m imagining that the tower blocks are alive and that the windows, with their blinds, are the eyes. So I guess the elevators are the mouths.

I love coming back to edit my poems. I get to feel like an artist, trying different words like a painter tries new colours or different brush strokes.
Sometimes I rub out a word or try different combinations.
When writing, I try to think about how the things I’m writing about make me feel. I try to put those emotions into the poem. So if I’m writing a scary poem, I might choose scary words.
If the tower block had filled me with joy, I could’ve written the poem differently…

Smiling down at us with bright eyes.
Their elevator mouths chuckle a laugh.
Changing words like this not only changes how the audience feel when they hear or read a poem. It also changes how you feel when you write it. I’ve written angry poems where I chose angry words. And you know what? After I finished writing the poem, I didn’t feel quite as angry anymore.
When I was a kid, I once got stuck in a lift. It was very scary. The light was dull and no matter how much I screamed, the lift did not move, the doors did not open. I felt claustrophobic and trapped and very, very frightened.
I’m trapped in the metal belly of the beast.
Its silver stomach churns.
I scratch at its sides,
Desperate to escape.
I scream for help
But all I can hear is the lift’s cold cackle.
Writing that poem out in the shape of a rectangle, like a lift, gives the sense of the metal box I was trapped in. Shape poems are sometimes called concrete poems. They’re a bit like making art out of words.
By thinking about your experiences and emotions, there is no end to the types of poems you can create. A happy memory can become a happy poem. I wonder how many poems are hiding in your memories. No matter how they come out on the page, they will all be your own unique, fun, original poems.

Ideas for the classroom
Before watching:
Explore with the children the things that mean something to them in their own lives, special people, special places, special things and special interests. You should model this by sharing your own examples first. You could carry this out as a shrine box activity where each child is given a shoe-boxed sized box which they can fill with photographs, favourite toys, bits of writing, mementoes etc. that help them talk about the things that matter to them. These then look wonderful as a shared display in the classroom for children to continue to browse and compare similarities and talk about topics and objects of interest.
After watching:
Talk about what they learnt about Joe from the video. Where he comes from, what things have happened to him and how he writes about them. Explore some of the common topics that mean something to the children, family, friends, home, hobbies, toys etc. and give time for the children to draw something that is special to them or a memorable time they have had. When they have the moment or thing concreted in an image, annotate the image with words and phrases to describe it and the emotions that it conjures. Now support them in making these words and phrases into lines that could make up a poem. It helps to explore other poems that could be drawn on as reference for how other poets have done this.
When children have worked up their drafts, allow time for them to publish these using presentation handwriting or using a word processor to allow children to experiment more freely with how they present their poems on the page. Display the finished poems prominently for a wider audience to appreciate. Allow space for children to perform poems if they wish, these could be videoed and added to the display via a laptop or tablet in the display area.
