Alex Cochrane scored his first goal of the season for Birmingham City, having made 52 appearances in all competitions
Alex Cochrane's superb long-range strike was enough to take League One champions Birmingham City over the 100-point mark with victory at Stevenage.
The game was the perfect example of a clash of styles, Birmingham wanting to play it around, but the hosts aiming to outwork them.
Stevenage arguably would have been happier with their first-half showing, Jordan Roberts pulling a low shot wide of the target and then Jamie Reid unable to turn a downward header from Charlie Goode's cross in.
Alfie May was off target for the visitors but Taylor Gardner-Hickman should have done better when presented with a chance six-yards out.
After the break, the intensity and pace of both sides picked up considerably but there were fewer chances than in the first half.
Cochrane came off the bench in the 72nd minute and three minutes later found the net with a fine left-footed strike from outside the box following a corner.
Harvey White almost grabbed a point in the final minute of stoppage time but Ryan Allsop was there to turn it behind and earn Blues the three points.
The victory means Chris Davies's side are on 102 points, a point off Wolverhampton Wanderers' League One record of 103 points, set in the 2013-14 season.
And, to beat Reading's EFL record of 106 points, set in the 2005-06 campaign, Blues must pick up five points from their remaining three matches - at home to Mansfield Town on Sunday and then away to Blackpool and Cambridge United.
